What we have built for, what we know is still missing, and how to tell us about a barrier.
Our target.
We build this site to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 at level AA. That is the standard we work to; it is not a claim of certified conformity, because no independent audit has been carried out yet.
What is in place.
Pages use semantic headings and landmarks so that screen readers can navigate them. Every control can be reached and operated from the keyboard, and the focus indicator is designed to stay visible on both light and dark surfaces. Text colours were measured against their backgrounds and meet the AA contrast ratio. Movement on the site, including the photographic parallax and the scroll reveals, is switched off for visitors whose system asks for reduced motion. Images that carry meaning have alternative text, and decorative ones are hidden from assistive technology.
Known limitations.
The archival photographs in our heritage section are described by what they show. The occasions and the other people in them are no longer documented, so those details stay out of the descriptions. No independent audit has been performed, so there may be barriers we have not found.
